My College Stress First-Aid Kit

It's my second year in college and I deal with the pains school brings me almost every day. Why not blog about it and maybe help some others out along the way?

Waitressing

Sometimes I really hate going to work, putting on the fake smile and fake, "hey guys how are you this wonderful evening!" attitude. Sometimes I'm in a bad mood the whole day, and I don't feel like greeting my table all giddy and smiley. And you know what? No I don't feel like bringing you a Diet Coke, with no ice, and a water.

You don't need two drinks.

We do not look like this all the time.
I promise.
She's way too happy.
And she hated making those salads.

  1. hahahahah this made my day! I'm a server too. Have been since I was old enough to work and it's the WORST. I could go on and on forever. Iced tea drinkers who need like 17 refills, extra ice, extra lemon, and a water. The only thing that keeps me motivated is thinking that at least I'm in college, so I (hopefully) won't be stuck doing this forever.

  2. Hahaha yep I've been working since I was about 13. I could post and complain about something different every day. Yes I think that too on bad nights. I feel bad for the people who just waitress or bartend as a career. How can you deal with that for the rest of your life!?

  3. Coming from someone who works as a cook, I swear waitressing must be the most miserable job. Even the the dish washers don't seem to hate their lives as much as waitresses. Not to mention they love taking their bottled-up frustrations out on the dishwashers and cooks.

  4. Have you ever told a cook to spit in someone's food? I had a math teacher in junior high that was a cook on the side, and he said that he always got requests to add spit.

  5. This reminds me of all my years of waitressing. I started when I was 12, did it through college and into graduate school, then went off to the airlines for a while, which is very waitress-in-the-sky business at times. Some days I'd get so tired of smiling. Flight attendants use tricks -- a little vaseline on your teeth makes smiling so much a little easier. Some days the only thing that would help my spirits would be for me to challenge myself. I'd think, "I'm going to make someone so happy. I'm going to be so nice I might scare somebody." And the first person who even smiled at me -- wham. I'd give free champagne, extra pretzels, caviar from first class, anything to counteract the mean people who'd just go on glaring.

  6. You know your job sucks when you get pissed off at people walking in the door.

  7. This reminds me of the workers at Apple. Everytime I've gone in there they are weird happy and almost too friendly.

    How do they do it?

    How do you do it?
